Woman, 49, Killed in S. Pasadena Officer-Involved Shooting

A 49-year-old woman who had been having a seizure and was waving what turned out to be a BB gun was fatally wounded Thursday in an officer-involved shooting in South Pasadena, authorities said.

Officers were sent about 11:50 a.m. to conduct a welfare check in the 1100 block of Fremont Avenue, according to the South Pasadena Police Department.

“During the course of (the) investigation, a confrontation with a subject ensued and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” according to a police statement.

The suspect was taken to a hospital and was later pronounced dead, Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators told reporters at the scene of the shooting.

“A Los Angeles County Mental Health clinician was on scene with officers from South Pasadena PD,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “They continued to speak to her for over an hour and a half in an attempt to offer her medical care. She then armed herself with a handgun and pointed it at the officers, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The BB gun, described as a “replica semi-automatic handgun,” was recovered at the scene.

No officers were injured.

Fremont Avenue was closed between Monterey Road and Oxley Street and the public was advised to avoid the area, police said.

The sheriff’s department was assisting South Pasadena police in the shooting investigation.

Asshole cops and their guns. I wish themurdering thugs would just drop dead.

by Anonymousreply 3August 31, 2018 10:25 AM

People having actual seizures don't pick up drugs and wave them around.

People on drugs, on the other hand...

by Anonymousreply 4August 31, 2018 10:45 AM

Read the article, r3.

They tried talking to her for over an hour and a half, in the presence of a county mental health worker, and then she brandished a (presumably realistic) gun at them.

The shooting was, in retrospect, an overreaction, but it certainly wasn't murder.

by Anonymousreply 5August 31, 2018 10:45 AM

She was terminally ill and probably on medication. It sounds like she was disoriented post seizure and acted erratically, which is VERY common after seizures.

The police knew enough to call in medical help but shot her anyway, aiming to kill rather than wound, which is the real problem here. And the person trying to talk her down probably needs some training if they couldn't get her calm after an hour and a half.

by Anonymousreply 6August 31, 2018 10:48 AM

R4, not all seizures are Grand Mal (or [italic]Grand Maul[/italic], as DataLounge would have it). Some of them look very different; so unless you have an M.D. after your name, shut your pie hole (and read your post before you upload it).

by Anonymousreply 7August 31, 2018 10:48 AM

R4 isn't the OP, they didn't "upload" the article. I did.

by Anonymousreply 8August 31, 2018 10:50 AM

"And the person trying to talk her down probably needs some training if they couldn't get her calm after an hour and a half. "

Obviously, you've never tried to talk down someone who's mentally ill, suffering from an illness that affects their mentation, or whacked out of their gourd. Sometimes they are amenable to being talked down, and sometimes they just aren't.

As for shooting to wound vs. shooting to kill, R6, it's not that easy. When a person is moving around and is apparently bringing a weapon to bear, you don't have time to delicately figure out which arm is dominant and wing them with a non-lethal shot, all you can do is aim for the center body. A body shot is probably the only possible shot on a moving target, and it may or may not kill, depending on what's hit. But a hit will definitely stop them from hurting you or someone else present, so that is what cops are trained to do.

by Anonymousreply 9August 31, 2018 10:54 AM

I really wish this had happened in Nevada.

by Anonymousreply 11August 31, 2018 11:04 AM

I doubt you're either a trained mental health professional or a member of law enforcement, r9.

After an hour and a half, most people post seizure would have recovered enough to be reasoned with easily. We don't know why the police were called in the first place -- was the welfare check for health reasons or behavioral? So we're missing info here, yet what we know sounds like she'd come out of the seizure early on.

And police are trained to shoot to kill, as multiple articles lately have revealed. It's not about ease of making the shot. I'll try to find an article and post a link here in a second.

She was featured in the TV show Intervention as a compulsive shopper. You could see her giddily shopping at the Grove in L.A.

Nobody remembers that because she was paired with Gamblin' Gabe in her episode.

by Anonymousreply 14August 31, 2018 11:22 AM

I'd seen her around on the #TCMParty hashtag and didn't realize she was the woman who had accused Clooney of blacklisting her.

She was excitable I guess but nothing out of the ordinary, and from what little I knew of her I wouldn't have suspected suicide by cop, but of course one can never know. Seems like she'd have been quicker about it rather than talking to the negotiator for so long, if that's what she wanted.

This newer article calls her "gravely disabled" and mentions the gun was a "BB-style" gun, whatever that means.

I rarely side with cops in these things but it sounds like the relics looked real. Suicide by cop basically.

by Anonymousreply 18August 31, 2018 2:28 PM

Running with a toy gun, so it sounds like suicide by cop.

by Anonymousreply 20August 31, 2018 2:29 PM

r20, I was just going to suggest the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 21August 31, 2018 2:34 PM

"Terminally ill" can last a long time.

I'd agree except with her history of seizures. They really do cause severe behavioral changes in people.

by Anonymousreply 23August 31, 2018 2:44 PM

Having a hard time caring about this TBH

by Anonymousreply 24August 31, 2018 2:48 PM

I agree with all who said suicide by cop. Damn shame for her family and the officer. I can’t say I followed the story about her accusations against Clooney but she seemed like she had a rough road

by Anonymousreply 25August 31, 2018 3:09 PM

Has Clooney commented on her death?

by Anonymousreply 26August 31, 2018 3:13 PM

She wasn't running with a gun. She was disabled and had trouble even moving, had just had a seizure, and the cops called her "gravely disabled."

Why would you even make that shit up? Just feeling mean at the moment and decided to lie about a terminally ill woman killed by cops?

by Anonymousreply 27August 31, 2018 4:36 PM

Is this linked to Our Maid?

by Anonymousreply 28August 31, 2018 5:15 PM

Does George have an alibi?

by Anonymousreply 29August 31, 2018 5:17 PM

I'm surprised our maid didn't weigh in on the allegations, but I didn't see her on the thread at the time.

by Anonymousreply 30August 31, 2018 8:24 PM

I wonder if the postmortem toxicology reports will be made public? Because I'd bet real money she was on something serious.

by Anonymousreply 31August 31, 2018 9:10 PM

She was shot in the cunt with a baked apple,

by Anonymousreply 33August 31, 2018 9:41 PM

She guest starred on Melrose Place. Her baby was still born and Kimberly made it look like Jo's was.

by Anonymousreply 34August 31, 2018 9:48 PM

She died at the hospital Emergency Room.

Irony.

by Anonymousreply 35August 31, 2018 9:59 PM

Clearly, mentally ill citizens deserve more than to be killed by cops in their own home. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 36August 31, 2018 10:14 PM

i blame Alanis Morrisette for r35's response

by Anonymousreply 37September 1, 2018 1:34 AM

How many people claim George Clooney had them blacklisted?

by Anonymousreply 38September 1, 2018 2:39 AM

To be fair, no many, r38. But if you stay here long enough, you'll run into somebody that claims Clooney is supporting a terrorist cell comprised of his wife and mother-in-law.

There's still no word about his children being recruited, but there will be.

by Anonymousreply 40September 1, 2018 2:42 AM

She didn't have health insurance and the landlord kept calling for "welfare" checks as a precusor to eviction.

by Anonymousreply 41September 1, 2018 5:26 AM

Why don't they use a tranquizer gun or those nets they can throw over people?

by Anonymousreply 42September 1, 2018 6:04 AM

This was handled quite badly, starting with the l Iandlord.
